A rectangular or square lawn is the easiest shape to measure. Multiply the length by the width and you have your area in square feet. If your yard measures 20 feet by 15 feet, for example, that comes out to 300 square feet. This is the shape most yards default to for at least part of the property, so it is worth measuring first even if the rest of your lawn is irregular.

What is the formula for a triangular lawn section?

Triangular sections show up in corner lots, along diagonal fence lines, or wherever a driveway or path cuts across the yard at an angle. The formula is base times height, divided by two. How accurate is manual measurement versus satellite based lawn measurement?

A tape measure or measuring wheel works fine for a small, simple yard, especially anything under about 500 square feet where a rectangle or two covers the whole property. Once your lawn gets bigger or has real curves to it, a map based or satellite tool tends to be both faster and more accurate, since it traces the actual boundary instead of approximating it with straight lines. What common mistakes cause inaccurate lawn area calculations?

A few errors show up again and again when people measure their own lawn, and most of them are easy to avoid once you know what to look for.

●      Using your lot size from a property listing instead of your actual lawn. Lot size includes your house, driveway, and any other structures, so it will always overstate your turf area.

●      Measuring a triangle along the slanted side instead of the true height, which inflates that section's area.
